Explain the meaning of a web address?

What is HTTP?

Short for HyperText Transfer Protocol, the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web. HTTP defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands. For example, when you enter a URL in your browser, this actually sends an HTTP command to the Web server directing it to fetch and transmit the requested Web page.

What is (WWW) World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web (abbreviated as WWW or W3, commonly known as the Web ), is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a web browser, one can view web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia, and navigate between them via hyperlinks.

What is the address of an website?

It's also known as the term "Web address", which is a synonym for address bar (also location bar or URL bar) that uses the HTTP / HTTPS protocol. This is a feature in a web browser that either shows the current URL or accepts a typed URL that the user wishes to go on to. Most address bars offer a list of suggestions while the address is being typed in. Auto-completion bases its search on the browser history.

What is the extension, like .COM , .BLOG, .ORG ....?

(1) An extra feature added to a standard programming language or system.
(2) In DOS and some other operating systems, one or several letters at the end of a filename. Filename extensions usually follow a period (dot) and indicate the type of information stored in the file. For example, in the filenameEDIT.COM, the extension is COM, which indicates that the file is a command file. (Depending on the operating system, the punctuation separating the extension from the rest of the filename may or may not be considered part of the extension itself.)

What is a browser and which one to choose??

"Definition: A browser is an application program that provides a way to look at and interact with all the information on the World Wide Web".

It is actually a software that accesses and displays pages and files on the web. Browsers require a connection to the Internet (e.g., through a cable modem, a direct Ethernet connection, or Wi-Fi). Popular web browsers include Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari.

Which is the right browser to choose??

1. Think...how old is your computer? Is it a mobile device? Know your systems specifications as this may be more suited to some browsers than others.

2. Think about your ideal browser; what would it be able to do? You may want it to be quite simple, handling only the bare necessities. You may want some basic features like web feed reading, bookmarking (favorites), or search boxes. Some browsers have a lot more, and that's where it starts to get confusing.

3. Make sure you know what platform you are on. Some browsers are only available to a certain operating system, or not available to one operating system.

**Firefox is available for both Windows and Mac computers. Internet Explorer is only available for Windows. Safari is available for Mac OS X, iOS, and Windows.

4. Research browsers. Tabbed browsers include Safari (runs on OS X, iPhone and is new to Windows), Firefox (general purpose with the most plug-ins), Opera (supportstorrents, handles e-mail and runs on mobile devices), Konqueror (dual purpose file manager), Seamonkey (includes HTML editor and e-mail client), Off By One (tiny) andFlock (social networking).

5. See the features of all browsers you have found, and compare with what you want.

6. If you have low memory consider Off by One, Dillo, Skipstone and Netsurf.

7. If you want a text-based browser for maximum speed, consider ELinks.

8. Find out if you can add features you may want or if there is a easy method to doing so such as an existing plugin or extension in the case of Firefox.

9. Download and install your new browser!

How to get a connection?

1. Make sure you have the correct IP scheme for your network. This would include the:
  • IP Address
  • Subnet Mask
  • Default Gateway
  • DNS Servers

2. IP Address:
  • If you have a router, common examples would be: 192.168.0.x, 192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.x
  • If you are directly connect to your DSL or Cable Modem, you should have an IP address that would correspond to something from your ISP.
  • What you don't want to have is something like 169.254.x.x. This means you are not getting and IP address assigned and needs to be resolved first.

After check that, before connecting to the Internet, you must determine how you're going to connect to the Internet. Are you going to be connecting to the Internet using a modem or a broadband Internet connection?

Connecting to the Internet with a modem:

Connecting to the Internet using a computer modem is the most widely available method of connecting to the Internet. Although connecting to the Internet with a modem is a much cheaper solution, it will be a much slower connection. If you plan on doing more than the occasional web surfing and reading and sending e-mail, you should consider broadband.
To connect to the Internet using a modem, your computer must have a modem and be in reach of being connected to your home phone line. Almost every computer today will come included with a modem, although many computer manufacturers are not including modems because of the increased popularity of broadband connections.

Connecting to the Internet with a broadband connection:

Connecting to the Internet over broadband is becoming a popular solution for connecting to the Internet. Broadband is a much faster solution for connecting to the Internet when compared to a modem and allows you to do more exciting things on the Internet, such as watching movies, listening to music, playing games, and have a much more enjoyable experience loading web pages without having to wait for each page to load.

What is internet??

The Internet is a massive public spiderweb of computer connections, it connects personal computers, mainframes, cell phones, GPS units, music players, soda pop machines, car alarms, and even dog collars. All of these computer connections exist for the sake of free information sharing. The definition of internet started in the 1960's under the original name "ARPAnet". ARPAnet was originally an experiment in how the US military could maintain communications in case of a possible nuclear strike.

The internet is considered a Big Collection of Computer and Cables named for "interconnection of computer networks"!
